Invest in an inexpensive electronic stud finder. Any hardware store will have a selection. The newer ones will even find the center of the stud for you. That way you'll be dead on every time. It's a tool you'll use a lot if you continue to do DIY projects. When installing crown molding, how far apart can I nail the top to hit a stud in the ceiling?
Crown molding can be tricky for a beginner which you must be to ask this question. The floor beams (joists) are usually 16'; or 24'; on center meaning that on the 2 sides of the room that are perpendicular to the floor joists you can nail every 16 or 24';. On the other 2 sides of the room the floor joists are parallel and there may be nothing to nail into. So you need to know the layout of the joists and if you can hit a joist on the parallel sides. If not you will have to provide a nailer which will depend on the size of the crown. Also try to establish if there are any pipes or AC lines in the wall. I have seen pros install crown upside down so check first. Good luckWhen installing crown molding, how far apart can I nail the top to hit a stud in the ceiling?
Use a product called liquid nails or PL premium. It is an adhesive you use instead of nails. No holes to cover. Make sure you burp it then it wont slide down the wall. Burping means, stick it to the wall, press firmly, then pull it off and stick it back on. Use acrylic caulking to fill in the seams after ward. Acrylic caulk smooths out with a wet sponge and can be painted if need be. Just don't put the adhesive to close to edge otherwise it will ooze out and make a mess. If this happens let it dry then gently scrape it off with a exacto knife.
Often a 2x2 nailer is is put up before hand so the top can be nailed at will. However, the most you should have to go is 2' to find a joist or truss and that should be fine.
