I've nailed carpet-gripper along the top of my 3 foot fence......?

It is clearly visible to act as a deterent to local youths who sit on the gable end of my home. A mother, who lives across the road, says she will report me to the police if anything happens to either of her two boys 11 and 13. She is concerned about the other kids who could hurt themselves on the protruding nails if they play along side the fence. I cant win!. Is it illegal to put them on my fence!?. Words have no effect on the gangs who sit on the fence or use it as a goal.I've nailed carpet-gripper along the top of my 3 foot fence......?
You shouldn't have protruding nails. If someone who wasn't a 'yob' got hurt then you'd be in deep trouble.

It is quite legal to use 'natural' deterrents. My local CPO recommended planting some pyrocantha and holly along the fence and training it along the top. It takes a little while to grow, unless you buy mature plants in a pot.

These plants are perfectly legal and nobody can have a go at you proving they stay on your property. They have very hard long spikes on the pyrocantha and holly is also rather sharp all the year round. Also grow a nice bushy rose along the foot of your fence. Choose a long thorned variety.

Nobody can prosecute you for having these, even if a yob falls into one and injures himself when climbing over your fence.

They also look nice.I've nailed carpet-gripper along the top of my 3 foot fence......?
Hope you catch a lot of cats!

Did you try talking to the neighbours first and ask them to dissuade their offspring from invading your territory? Or is this no longer the done thing in the UK?
Well now that's not very nice. The little @#$%^%26amp;s deserve it though if they're (obviously) being nuissances. I probably would have just covered the top of the fence with something sticky like a slow tack rate glue. It will ruin their clothes but not do any real harm, while I like your way the drawback is that they may need Tetanus shots!

You might even want to paint the fence with a clear coat or varnish just before they come over also!
Yes, if they get hurt, they can sue. You can't win for losing, I know. The best thing to do is erect a higher fence - as high as local ordinances allow. Also check your local ordinances about signs. In some places, the simple erection of ';no trespassing'; and ';no loitering signs'; helps, because it's against the law to ignore them if a homeowner has them, thereby giving you more ammo in any legal action that a b***h like those kids' mother might take. Might not apply to your town, but worth finding out.
If someone hurts themselves you may be liable.
I think it is illegal - don't you know that scummy little teenagers have human rights and are allowed to do whatever they want - you will be expected to provide them with cider soon so they can drink whilst sitting on your wall. Although it is really tempting, broken glass is also illegal. What about the metal wrought iron pointed gates - you can get a short version for on top of walls - perhaps get a grinder and just sharpen the points a little bit more. What about playing opera or classical music really loud from your house when they sit on your wall - all joking aside, some local shops have tried this to stop youths hanging around outside their shops and it works - it's so uncool for them!
You may get arrested if a child gets hurt...remove the nails.
Well shes not much of a mother then is she, how dare she say that she will report you if her kids are hurt, hasn't she got a fence herself that her brats can sit on and damage, I would have a solicitors letter sent to her pretty damn sharpish telling her if her brats sat on my fence again I will prosecute them and her for trespassing.
Anti-climb paint? Not illegal at all.

Thorny bush? Failing that, a big dog that you train to puncture footballs.
Get a paintball gun, and for extra effect, put the paintballs in your freezer for a couple of days.
Ive the same problem with the children climbing on my wall , but i think it's illegal to put anything up to stop them try your local police station and ask them what you can and cant put up , i have all stones in my front and great big ceramic balls , one of my neighbours said the children will hurt themselves on thay , my point to her was thay shouldn't be on my wall or in my front garden in the first place.
You've got a point! If mothers like that one would teach their children to be mannerly and to respect others, you wouldn't have had to do that in the first place! I'd talk to a lawyer to be certain. You don't want to lose everything because of b****es like that!
This is legally a grey area because they would have to take you to court and are they seriously going to do that when the kids know it is there?

I'm not a legal expert, i suppose she could tell the police so you could be told to remove it but the fact remains her children wouldn't be hurt of they didn't try to climb it. it's not going to jump out and cut them.

If i was living next door to you (and i have 2 kids) i would say it was their own fault if they got hurt because they know it's there, them and the other kids shouldn't be climbing your fence anyway!

Sounds like the mother is the biggest problem, no wonder her kids don't behave.
There is a product called Prik-a-Strip that is plastic and totally legal which you can attach to your fence. Its has points to it which stops cats but will also make it harder for people to climb over.

I do suggest you take down the carpet-gripper though as kids ,being what they are today ,will give them an excuse to make you a target for other bigger problems for you and your family.
Yes, your fence has to be at least 6 foot, you could be arrested if any harm or damage to anyone going near your fence
I'm afraid it's illegal, same reason for not allowing broken glass set into cement on top of walls. Sad I know but what can you do?

I had my shed burnt down by these thoughtless yobs, the police said there is nothing they can do unless I caught them in the act, which I didn't.
it is an offence to put carpet gripper on your fence im afraid, but as a kid the one thing that would deter me was that black greasy vandal paint,i'm u could get this from somewhere like b%26amp;q reasonably cheat,id advise trying it.
I sympathise with you, but yes, knowing how ludicrous our laws are you could well get done if one of the brats hurts themselves. It might be worth seeking advice from your local police station as to what is acceptable. Perhaps you could try anti-vandal paint?
puting carpet gripper is Illegal. Anti vandal paint is ok but you must put up a sign that says it has been used on the premises although you don't have to state where.
You cannot put anything like that below six foot and even then you must be careful as there was a thief near me who cut themselves on wire on the top of a 7 ft fence and succesfully sued the owner of the property !!!
Yep as far as i know its illegal, but then so is climbing on and vandalising someone elses property. I would leave it up and take a risk that nobody reports you. The mother should be chastising her children not you. If you do take it down then try contacting your local police and asking them to patrol past your house, this sometimes works as a deterrent. Good luck xx
Yep! Sorry but it is illegal to fit such items as this to a boundary wall or fence,If anyone is injured they can sue!

I know how you feel as I have had this problem on many occasions when I used to live in England.

Any attempt to ask the offenders politely to desist will usualy end with further noise %26amp; probably damage to your property, so keep calm.

I would like to be able to suggest a call to the local Police but they are usualy as helpfull as an ashtray on a motorbike!

No..... when little shits like this are making your life a misery the best thing to do is to hide somewhere where you have a clear view of whats going on...preferably a flat garage roof or similar, make sure you are unconspicuous!

Then when the time is right shoot a couple of them in the legs with a high powered air rifle...you must then get the gun out of the house maybe to an understanding next door neighbour %26amp; if the Police arrive feign all knowledge of the event and appear as shocked as they are...!

You see the Police have a favourite saying they use when you ask them if they can catch the person that committed an offence against YOU! And it's this .....We know it's them BUT WE CAN'T PROOVE IT! so i like to give the same message back to the Police when I am forced to defend myself or property from thugs...OK it might have been me? PROOVE IT! They never have yet!

Look after yourself %26amp; play it clever!
