Why are the tops of your nails white and the rest pink?

its just one of those stupid things i have been wondering :-)??Why are the tops of your nails white and the rest pink?
Nails are made up of translucent keratin, whick is the same colour as the white free edge of your nail, however when the nail plate is attached to the nail bed, the blood vessels show through, which gives it a slightly pink colour.

You must have hear the myth that the white flecks on your nails are a calcium or zinc deficiancy, in truth, if you knock you nail it will lift slightly from the nail bed and that is why is why the nail bruises are white.

Hope this helpsWhy are the tops of your nails white and the rest pink?
The pink part is actually attached to skin, called the cuticle...that's why it hurts so much if you cut to much of your nail. The white at the top is just because this part is not attatched to skin, and stuff like dust, dirt, germs dead skin etc collects under there, and normal wear and tear, making it white, or brown. ALso, sometimes the part of your nail that sticks out (not attatched to your skin) has become thicker as we get older, because we have clipped them so many times. This also contributes to the white color.
Its because the rest of your nail is connected to your finger and the pink color is just your finger underneath. The white part is really the same color as the rest of your nail, it just looks white because it has no skin under it.
because the bottom portion of the nail is on top of the skin and the skin is pink and white at the tips becasue it is not on the skin
because the nail is translucent and lets light through

the top of you nail is white because there is no skin behind it

either that or you've had a french manicure lol

IT IS NOT BLOOD!

just thought i would highlight and make that point clear
your whole nail is white but where it is attached to your finger it appears to be pink because there is blood and other things underneath, just when it grows away from your finger it is seen as white!
probably becasue your ';Pink nail'; is on the part where there blood, underneath, and the whie part is at the part, which is not underneath blood
the whole nail is actually the colour of the top white part of the nail. its pick cause there is flesh under the nail at that part

pmsl because the pink bit is attatched to your finger...the white bit has grown up and is not attatched to anything..

Are you having a fluffy moment???
Because our nails are actually translucent. They stay the same as they grow but the pink bit is the flesh underneath and when it gets past that it appears whitish

they are pink because they are on top of flesh, if you ripped off the whole nail, it would be entirely white[like the top of the nail]
because the white bit is where they separate from your finger/skin...so they are pink where there is your finger/flesh/skin underneath them...look for yourself.
There's like blood underneath them or something. And the white part is where its got no skin or nothing under it so you cant see the blood. Idk? I guess its kinda weird. Hard to explain too. =]
Because they aren't stuck to your fingers so you can't see the blood under the skin.
because the pink bit is attached to your finger, the white bit isnt. Have you ever broken a nail and made it bleed.
Its Acutully ALL white/clear Its Just The Bottom Parts Are Blending Fron Your Skin And Blood.
the rest is pink because its stuck to your skin which is pink
the tops arent attached to the skin....:)
it revolves around cells
cos the bottom parts have loadsa blood directly under them
because the light reflects under it!
Yours are white?

That's weird. Mine are brown...

Strange.
because of the skin underneth

im 15 and even i can work that out
